Generating Terms of a Sequence

MA13-01

This lesson is coming soon.

In this lesson

Generate the terms of a sequence from either a term-to-term rule or a position-to-term rule, and correctly identify which task type a question is asking for.

What it covers

  • Generating further terms from a stated term-to-term rule (e.g. 'add 4 each time', 'double then subtract 3')
  • Generating terms from a stated position-to-term rule (e.g. term = 3 x position + 2)
  • Generating terms from a pattern or diagram by counting
  • Explicitly contrasting 'find the next term' with 'state the rule' as two distinct question types
  • Following a multi-operation term-to-term rule in the correct order

For teachers

This GCSE Maths lesson teaches generating terms of a sequence. By the end, students should be able to generate the terms of a sequence from either a term-to-term rule or a position-to-term rule, and correctly identify which task type a question is asking for. It works through two worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
