Solving a Linear Inequality

MA18-02

This lesson is coming soon.

In this lesson

Solve a linear inequality in one variable algebraically, flipping the inequality symbol when multiplying or dividing by a negative, and represent the solution on a number line.

What it covers

  • Isolating the unknown using inverse operations across an inequality (add, subtract, multiply, divide)
  • The rule: flip the inequality symbol when multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative number
  • Writing the final answer with the inequality symbol, never with '='
  • Representing the solved inequality on a number line using the open/closed circle convention

For teachers

This GCSE Maths lesson teaches solving a linear inequality. By the end, students should be able to solve a linear inequality in one variable algebraically, flipping the inequality symbol when multiplying or dividing by a negative, and represent the solution on a number line. It works through three worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
