Scale drawings and maps

MA24-09

This lesson is coming soon.

In this lesson

Use a scale drawing or map to find real-world lengths or bearings, and construct a scale drawing from real-world measurements.

What it covers

  • Reading a scale drawing or map using a stated scale (e.g. 1 cm to 5 m, or 1:25000) to find a real-world length
  • Converting a real-world length into a scale-drawing length
  • Measuring a bearing directly from a scale drawing or map, not just a length
  • Applying a non-integer scale factor (e.g. 1:1.5) directly by multiplication or division, rather than an informal halve-and-add method

For: AQA GCSE 8300, Edexcel GCSE 1MA1, Edexcel IGCSE 4MA1, Eduqas GCSE C300, OCR GCSE J560, Cambridge IGCSE 0580

For teachers

This GCSE Maths lesson teaches scale drawings and maps. By the end, students should be able to use a scale drawing or map to find real-world lengths or bearings, and construct a scale drawing from real-world measurements. It works through two worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
