Geometry notation and types of angle
MA25-01
This lesson is coming soon.
In this lesson
State and use standard geometric notation for points, lines, parallel/perpendicular lines, triangle sides/angles and polygons, and correctly classify an angle as acute, right, obtuse or reflex.
What it covers
- Three-letter angle notation (e.g. angle ABC) and why it removes ambiguity that a vague description can't
- Standard convention for labelling triangle sides (lowercase, opposite the angle) and vertices/angles (uppercase)
- Notation for points, line segments, parallel lines (matching arrow marks) and perpendicular lines (right-angle square)
- Naming and distinguishing acute, right, obtuse and reflex angles, including two angles that share a vertex
- Drawing a simple diagram from a written description using these conventions

For teachers
This GCSE Maths lesson teaches geometry notation and types of angle. By the end, students should be able to state and use standard geometric notation for points, lines, parallel/perpendicular lines, triangle sides/angles and polygons, and correctly classify an angle as acute, right, obtuse or reflex. It works through two worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
