Angle sum of a triangle and the exterior angle rule

MA25-05

This lesson is coming soon.

In this lesson

Use the fact that the angles in a triangle sum to 180 degrees and the exterior angle of a triangle equals the sum of the two interior opposite angles, including inside a chained isosceles-triangle problem.

What it covers

  • Angle sum of a triangle = 180 degrees, including finding a missing angle
  • Exterior angle of a triangle = sum of the two interior opposite angles (equivalently: exterior angle + adjacent interior angle = 180 degrees on a straight line)
  • A chained isosceles-triangle example combining base-angles-are-equal with the 180-degree triangle sum or angles-on-a-line

For teachers

This GCSE Maths lesson teaches angle sum of a triangle and the exterior angle rule. By the end, students should be able to use the fact that the angles in a triangle sum to 180 degrees and the exterior angle of a triangle equals the sum of the two interior opposite angles, including inside a chained isosceles-triangle problem. It works through two worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
