Enlarging a shape by a positive or fractional scale factor

MA28-05

This lesson is coming soon.

In this lesson

Enlarge a shape from a given centre using ray lines for a whole-number or fractional scale factor, and state the centre and scale factor of a given enlargement.

What it covers

  • Enlarging a shape from a given centre using ray lines for a whole-number scale factor greater than 1
  • Enlarging a shape from a given centre using ray lines for a fractional scale factor (0<k<1)
  • Identifying the centre and scale factor of a given enlargement
  • Stating that enlargement preserves angles but not lengths (unless scale factor is 1)
  • Using the word 'enlargement' correctly even when the image is smaller than the object

For teachers

This GCSE Maths lesson teaches enlarging a shape by a positive or fractional scale factor. By the end, students should be able to enlarge a shape from a given centre using ray lines for a whole-number or fractional scale factor, and state the centre and scale factor of a given enlargement. It works through two worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
