Frequency tables and frequency trees
MA34-02
This lesson is coming soon.
In this lesson
Read and complete frequency tables and frequency trees, correctly distinguishing branches that sum to the incoming frequency total from branches that sum to 1.
What it covers
- Recording outcomes of a probability experiment in a simple frequency table
- Completing a frequency tree by filling in missing frequency values so each pair of branches sums to the total flowing into that point
- Reading values directly off a completed frequency table or frequency tree
- The explicit contrast: frequency tree branches sum to a frequency total (the number of people/trials that reached that point); probability tree branches sum to 1
- A light-touch final step: converting one completed frequency-tree value into a relative frequency, as a preview of the next video

For teachers
This GCSE Maths lesson teaches frequency tables and frequency trees. By the end, students should be able to read and complete frequency tables and frequency trees, correctly distinguishing branches that sum to the incoming frequency total from branches that sum to 1. It works through two worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
