Coordinates from Geometric Information and Midpoints
This lesson is coming soon.
In this lesson
Find a point's coordinates using a geometric property that needs a calculation step, and find the midpoint of a line segment by averaging both coordinates, and calculate the length of a line segment from its endpoint coordinates.
What it covers
- Finding a point's coordinates using a geometric property that requires a calculation (e.g. using equal, parallel sides of a parallelogram to find a fourth vertex)
- Finding the midpoint of a line segment: average the x-coordinates, average the y-coordinates
- Checking a midpoint answer isn't just one of the two endpoints
- The length of a line segment from its endpoints, as Pythagoras applied to the horizontal and vertical differences
Key words
For: Cambridge IGCSE 0580, Edexcel IGCSE 4MA1
On the specification
| Board | Spec | Statement |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge IGCSE 0580 | C3.4 | Extended content only. |
| Cambridge IGCSE 0580 | E3.4 | Calculate the length of a line segment. |
| Edexcel IGCSE 4MA1 | F3.3D | Determine the coordinates of points identified by geometrical information |
| Edexcel IGCSE 4MA1 | F3.3E | Determine the coordinates of the midpoint of a line segment, given the coordinates of the two end points |
For teachers
This GCSE Maths lesson teaches coordinates from geometric information and midpoints. By the end, students should be able to find a point's coordinates using a geometric property that needs a calculation step, and find the midpoint of a line segment by averaging both coordinates, and calculate the length of a line segment from its endpoint coordinates. It works through two worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
