Volume ratio of similar shapes (Higher)

MA26-06

This lesson is coming soon.

In this lesson

Use the cube of the linear scale factor to find an unknown volume in similar solids, without confusing it with the area case.

What it covers

  • Volume scale factor = (linear scale factor) cubed
  • Deriving the volume ratio from the linear ratio directly, not by re-using an area ratio
  • Explicit contrast against the area case, so the two never get swapped
  • Working in either direction: linear to volume ratio, or volume ratio back to linear ratio

For teachers

This GCSE Maths lesson teaches volume ratio of similar shapes (Higher). By the end, students should be able to use the cube of the linear scale factor to find an unknown volume in similar solids, without confusing it with the area case. It works through two worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
