Composite solids: breaking a shape into parts

MA29-08

This lesson is coming soon.

In this lesson

Find the surface area or volume of a solid built from combinations of standard solids, including frustums, by splitting it into parts and deciding which faces are still on the outside.

What it covers

  • Splitting a composite 3D solid into its standard-solid parts
  • Deciding which faces are internal (hidden where parts join) and excluded from surface area, vs external and included
  • Combining part volumes; combining part surface areas correctly
  • Frustums (a cone with the top sliced off) taught as full-solid-minus-removed-solid
  • Clearly labelling which working belongs to which part - the atom's single documented failure mode

For teachers

This GCSE Maths lesson teaches composite solids: breaking a shape into parts. By the end, students should be able to find the surface area or volume of a solid built from combinations of standard solids, including frustums, by splitting it into parts and deciding which faces are still on the outside. It works through three worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
