Combined events: independent and dependent probabilities
This lesson is coming soon.
In this lesson
Choose an appropriate representation - tree diagram, sample-space diagram or Venn diagram - and correctly combine probabilities, multiplying for independent events and adjusting for dependent (without-replacement) events, to solve general combined-probability problems.
What it covers
- Recognising whether a general (not necessarily diagrammed) problem describes independent or dependent (without-replacement) combined events
- Choosing between a tree diagram, sample-space diagram or Venn diagram as the working method
- Applying multiply-for-AND / add-for-OR correctly without a diagram being handed to you
- Correctly adjusting the denominator (and numerator, where relevant) for without-replacement events in a general context
- Carrying a combined-events calculation through to one final simplified answer, not stopping at a partial method

For teachers
This GCSE Maths lesson teaches combined events: independent and dependent probabilities. By the end, students should be able to choose an appropriate representation - tree diagram, sample-space diagram or Venn diagram - and correctly combine probabilities, multiplying for independent events and adjusting for dependent (without-replacement) events, to solve general combined-probability problems. It works through three worked examples and the mistakes examiners report.
